- On June 10, 1940, Canadian Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King declared war on Italy. Within hours, more than 31,000 Italian Canadians were branded enemy aliens. Among them, approximately 600 men were torn from their homes, separated from their families, and imprisoned in camps—most notoriously in Petawawa, Ontario. - For decades, the memories of this painful chapter were buried—silenced by shame, fear, and humiliation. Now, as that generation fades, their descendants are breaking the silence. Determined to preserve their families’ truths, they are uncovering long-hidden stories and ensuring that this dark moment in Canadian history is finally remembered and understood.
