When striker Paolo Rossi led Italy to a 3-1 win against West Germany in the 1982 World Cup Final on a sun-filled July afternoon, Italian Canadians across the country spilled into the streets of their cities to express their joy and jubilation.

In Toronto, a million people descended upon St. Clair Avenue West in the largest post-war gathering of Italian Canadians. Some have called it a defining moment in the rise of soccer culture in Canada.

Until then, soccer fans were largely invisible. As Canada prepares to host the 2026 World Cup in conjunction with USA and Mexico, this project will explore the rise and soaring popularity of soccer in this country.
